FACES WE LOVE
A vibrant art project created to celebrate our uniqueness.
STOP AND SEE THE BEAUTY.
about the project
“I’ve always preferred portraiture in all of the mediums I’ve worked with. I loved capturing people in the most candid of moments. The idea for Faces We Love was born while I was studying and practicing oil painting portraiture.
I went through a time in my life where through my observation of people’s self-doubts and insecurities (as well as my own) I noticed these shortcomings were becoming more prominent in their actions. I was saddened when photography clients or friends of mine failed to see the beauty and uniqueness I saw in them. It made me realize that comparing ourselves to others creates unnecessary obstacles on our paths to happiness. Learning to love yourself completely and embracing your flaws and mistakes is a challenge everyone goes through. So why not paint people the way I see them: colourful and unique.
Through participation of this art project and self-exploration, each individual reveals a unique and personal detail. Each portrait alone celebrates personal courage and diversity. Uniting the portraits in a collage format creates a positively, powerful statement: Stop and see the beauty. That is my vision. For people to walk by a large installation, appreciate and acknowledge the human collective that reside among us, in its entire uniqueness. Beauty, that which, radiates from within and in everyone around us.
The process of painting 1,000 portraits for Faces We Love helps me master my technique in portraiture, while the subject is celebrated for their courage in participating. I also ask each person to share something deeply personal–something no one knows about them. This creates human connection through art.
Once I have met my goal of 1,000 portraits, they will be torn up to represent our tendencies to self-destruct. Using the torn pieces, I will then create a collage to symbolize unity, rebuilding of self and growth.I hope this project will encourage people to love themselves, exactly the way they are.”
